What governs us
It's fascinating that a time of such profound change in the world is also happening at a time of annual change for the earth.
Though spring comes to us a bit earlier this year, many parts of it are predictable, easily recognized, beautiful and welcomed — all the things COVID-19 is not. We know spring will, at some point, turn over the reins to summer, but we're not sure what our circumstances will be when that happens.
Yet, the comforting signs of spring reflect what's happening in many lives these days. There is growth and progress, with the final destination perhaps unclear, but we press on. There is rejuvenation amid much toil, but we all move forward together because that's what we do. And, so importantly, there is beauty all around.
The world knows that beauty. It's touched each of our lives in some way, whether it's a public service courageously rendered, someone calling to check on us, or the fulfillment of giving. It demands and drives progress, no matter what, just like the unfoldment and renewal of springtime.
Our profound, beautiful, and natural connection to one another through love and kindness is familiar to us all. It compels us to care for each other, as seen in countless acts of compassion over the past few weeks. That's the strength that really governs us, and through it, we will emerge from this crisis as one.
